organization that serves students in grades 8 through 12 in the metro

over 9,000 students in achieving their educational and personal goals. Additional information about YOTO is available by contacting mgcox@yoto.org

Over 20 Rotarians and spouses helped to complete our successful Thesaurus Project by distributing almost 600 books to 8th graders at Apache, Sierra Vista, and Smith Middle Schools on Sept 5. Previously, over 100 books were provided to middle schools in Bisbee and Tombstone, making a total of over 700.
Sierra Vista Superintendent of Schools Renae Humburg said, "Thesauruses are an important tool to improve writing skills. They are required for AIMS Testing." Teachers at each school expressed great appreciation for the project and said they were excited about being able to teach the students how to use this valuable resource.
Past President Ernie Montagne spoke briefly about Rotary making a difference in the community and the world. He invited the students to consider joining the Interact Club at Buena High School next year so they too would have an opportunity to make a difference in the community.
The following Rotarians participated in the distribution:

FORT YUMA ROTARY BRINGS JOY TO CHILDREN
|
The Emperor of story book
fame had nothing on almost 50 local children on July 28th, when members
of Fort Yuma Rotary took them on a whirlwind spree through Mervyn's to
purchase them each more than one hundred dollars worth of new clothes.
|
| The shopping
spree, which was arranged with the help of Boys and Girls Club Director
and Fort Yuma member Louis Galaviz, was one of two annual shopping sprees
to benefit local children. The July spree outfits each child with
new clothes for school, underwear, socks and shoes. Each member
escorted one or more children and helped with their selections, spending
an allotted $100.
Mervyn's generously offered
an additional 25% discount, allowing the club to spend $125.00 on each
child. While each member sharply chose sale items and bargains to
stretch their purchasing dollar, the kids eyed hip, fashionable clothes to
look sharp in school. After the spree, the children were taken back
to the B&G Club for a haircut, eye exam, dental exam and breakfast.
We'll return again in December to purchase more children winter clothes
and jackets. Fort Yuma loves spending money on the community, and
when we can spend it on kids, it is just that much more fun.

Stealing of the
Bell
Denise McGregor,
President of Yuma Rotary Club, proudly recovers the stolen bell from the
Fort Yuma Club, after it left her Tuesday meeting with a contingent
of Fort Yuma members. PRID Dave Hossler, who is also a member of the
Yuma Rotary Club, looks on with a smile as he is the one who told
Keith about the old Rotary game during Keith's year as President
and got it all started again. |
The Stealing
of the Bell, a traditional Rotary game that was revived during
President Keith's year (04-05), has been revived yet again,
somewhat by accident. The game is initiated by a minimum of five
members attending another Club's meeting. They are allowed to
"steal" that club's bell after the meeting. In order to get
their bell back, the club must attend the meeting of the club who stole
their bell with 5 of their members or 10% of their membership (whichever
is smaller). The game is designed to promote camaraderie and
social interaction of local Clubs. During Keith's year, Fort Yuma
managed to possess every bell from every Club in Yuma during the same
week. Everyone enjoyed it, attendance was up, and everyone got to
know Rotarians they wouldn't have met otherwise. And, in keeping
with the First Commandment of Fort Yuma, IT WAS FUN! |
