William "Skip" Horie passed away on Saturday April 12, doing one of the things he loved best to do: Sharing Rotary with newer Rotarians. He collapsed at the District Assembly at
Pima Community College NW,after leading a group of President-Elects in discussing
the topic of "Club Leadership". Skip is survived by his wife Vergene, who shared
his love of Rotary projects, and their children, who were visiting in Tucson this week.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and his Marana club mates in their loss.

The GSE team arrived on schedule Thursday, April 24th!

On Saturday after the Trail Ride, the team represented Rotary at the 6th annual Pima Community College Japanese Language Contest at the Downtown Campus. Team Leader Saito was one of the contest judges of the 60 plus contestants. What a surprise for the team to discover an interest in Japanese language and culture in the southern Arizona.
District 5500 GSE Team Leader Michael Drake took the team to dinner on Saturday evening with other Rotarian friends and Arizona GSE team members.

Sunday afternoon they were transported to Kearny, where Samantha Gibson is the coordinator. For the next few days, they will learn more about Arizona culture - copper mines, cattle ranches, arboretum.

For the next four weeks, the Japanese GSE team will be travelling throughout District 5500 making new friends, living with host families, giving presentations to Rotary clubs, visiting their vocational counterparts and local sites.

They are having a wonderful time and say "Arigato" (Thank you) to the Rotarians of District 5500.

Visit to Nonceba Project
by PDG Rad Fisher

I have just returned from So. Africa and visited the Nonceba project.

Pictured are Hazel Black, the driving force and coordinator of the project, and Nocawe (Patricia) Mankayi.

Hazel was who discovered Patricia and her work among the victims of child rape. She is a pretty wealthy woman but whose compassion was touched when she realized the enormity of the problem. She decided to do something about it. This is when she discovered Rotary and a member of the RC of Kromboom, Dr Georges Stalacopoulos, a well known gynecologist in Cape Town. She asked him if he would help form the Nonceba Charitable Trust in order to raise money. The trust was formed with the two of them and Patricia becoming trustees, a position they still hold today. The RC of Kromboom agreed to pay the old centre’s rental, electricity and telephone bill for one year while the trust tried to get on its feet. Nothing much happened until Ashley, a member of Sea Point’s Interact club came on the scene. She made her film, went on exchange and was tragically killed. Since then through mainly Don Peters' and Rodney Mazinter's efforts, money has poured in. The D.9350 Rotarians work alongside the Nonceba trust but do not get directly involved with their affairs. After the security system is in place the furnishings will brought in. The ribbon cutting is scheduled for June. Hazel will be producing a DVD to show off this beautiful facility when everything is in place.

    Katie Mills writes from Peru

Dear Rotarians,

I hope that you all are enjoying a successful Rotary year, and are as excited as I am for the upcoming year in which we Make Dreams Real!

I have been very active in the Rotaract club of Pueblo Libre in Lima, Peru. We have been working to give the people living in the impoverished community of Ventanilla in Lima, Peru a park where children and their families can have a healthy, safe environment for recreation. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite you all to share in our project. Attached is a copy of the project profile compiled by one of the members that I've translated to English. We are looking to purchase a swing set for the park, which costs around $2,300 USD. If several members contribute to our project, I know that we could easily raise the funds! We will also continue to host benefits here in Lima to meet our project goals.

Thank you for your time and for your constant support!

Yours in service,
Katie Mills

ce work and                                    News from Uruguay - Alberto's Wedding

Dear Rotarians friends in D. 5500, Arizona,

I hope you are well.

I would like to share with you a picture, which Alberto just distributed to us. It is from his wedding party (last October).

The picture reflects friendship, one of the most strong values that Rotary promotes and it is a landmark for the entire Humanity.

Before our experience in Arizona, the GSE Team members we did not know each other. After that wonderful time, we became friends... No matter if we cannot see each other very often…we have the privilege of knowing that “our friendship is there”, as an appreciated great treasure.

This feeling is also shared with all of you because you were the source. You all always help us to rediscover it through the excellent experiences that are, and will be present forever, in our minds and hearts.

With my best regards,

Daniel Pagliano

President-Elect 2008-2009

Paul Harris Society Inducts New Members

Congratulation to these three newly inducted members of the D5500 Paul Harris Society:

  • Guery Flores, Sierra Vista Sunrise RC
  • Skip Horie, Marana RC
  • Frank Presson, Catalina (Tucson) RC.

These new members have joined the select few who have chosen to make a commitment to contribute $1,000 or more each year to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, PolioPlus Partners, or Humanitarian Grants Program special program.   Each received a certificate of membership and a PHS pin banner (pictured here). The PHS is a special program administered by districts to recognize those individuals who choose to make this significant commitment to TRF.

Because of their commitment, The Rotary Foundation will be better able to continue to support its goals in the three main program areas:  Polio Plus, humanitarian grants, and educational programs.  For example, $1000 will provide polio vaccine for 2000 at-risk children in India, will help to bring clean water to a needy community in Africa, or can provide up to 900 dictionaries to third graders in YOUR community.

For more information about PHS in D5500, please contact Annual Giving Chair Ernie Montagne at ernie.montagne@cox.net or by phone at 520-378-4601.

Successful Trip For GSE Team To Japan

The D5500 GSE team returned in late October from a five-week trip to D2530 in central Japan.  Team leader was Michael Drake, a Tucson attorney and member of Tucson Sunset Rotary Club. Team members were Cecile Brown, a Tucson firefighter and EMT; Sarah Wright, a Tucson attorney; and Joel Mayer, a  civil engineer in Sierra Vista.

The team visited six communities in Fukushima Prefecture, 200 km north of Tokyo.   The team was hosted by Rotary families, gave presentations to Rotary clubs, participated in vocational experiences, attended the District Conference, and generally had a once in a lifetime experience.

Rotary is very strong and active in Japan. The Japanese Rotarians were exceedingly generous and hospitable. In addition to learning about Rotary in Japan, the team hiked in Bandai National Park; wore authentic and expensive kimonos; made soba noodles and manju by hand; harvested rice; enjoyed hot springs; participated in tea ceremonies and  Buddhist prayers; and, of course, tried a great variety of wonderful Japanese food.

The GSE team from D2530 will be in southern Arizona next April.

Our team is now available to give club programs. Contact Michael Drake at Michael.Drake@azbar.org or telephone 520-624-2488

A New Interact Club is Chartered

A new Interact Club at Canyon del Oro High School was welcomed to the Rotary family with a pizza party Jan. 9. Rotarians from the sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Oro Valley, presented the new club with a framed charter and officer and member pins.

The new club evolved from the International Club at the school and plans its primary focus to be on international service.

Paul Harris Society

Members will be recognized at a suitable ceremony and will receive a PHS pin banner (suitable for wearing with the Rotary pin or Paul Harris Fellow pin) and a certificate of membership.

Guidelines and an application for membership are attached.

The Rotary Club of Polokwane District 9250 offers safari opportunity

This unique project serves the dual purpose of promoting international relations and generating funds for worthy charities whilst providing participants with an experience of a lifetime. Safari will be held in May and September 2008.

Past charities which have benefited from this project are an Environmental Education Centre in Polokwane Game Reserve, The Siloe School for the Blind, Farasani Family Forum for AIDS Orphans and Thusanang Adult Education Outreach Centre. Not to be ignored is the wonderful International Fellowship enjoyed by both the visiting and local Rotarians participating in the safaris.

“Rotary Leadership Institute” - Training Day in Casa Grande a Smashing Success

On Saturday, September 15, the Arizona Tri-District PETS Committee, chaired by PDG Ron Goodsite, sponsored a hugely successful Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training day in Casa Grande. Purpose of the event, staged at the Francisco Grand Resort, was to train trainers for future Tri-District RLI sessions. The day’s activities were coordinated by Greg Podd, D5510 Tri-District RLI Coordinator, Sharyn Chesser, D5500 Trainer, and Pat Webb, D5500 Leadership Co-Chair. Forty seven Rotarians attended, 37 from D5500. The day’s proceedings were facilitated by two outstanding R. I. trainers, Frank Collins, D7890, (Past RI Director, Past VP of RI, and current Chair of the RI Leadership Development and Training Committee); and PDG Dan Spencer, D7640 (senior trainer for the Rotary Leadership Institute).

Facilitator orientation, Francisco Grande, Casa Grande, September 15, 2007

What is the Rotary Leadership Institute? The RLI is a multi-district training program aimed at substantially improving Rotary knowledge and leadership skills of future leaders.

What are the courses? The Institute is divided into three days (Parts I, II, and III). The courses are designed to provide wide-ranging Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills.

When and where? D5500’s Part I will be conducted at the District Conference in Tucson, Saturday, October 27, 2007. Part II will be held concurrent with a District Assembly in the spring of 2008, and Part III will follow in the fall of 2008.

What are the teaching methods? Sessions will be interactive with discussion and group participation.

Who are the faculty? Faculty members are Rotarians recruited for their teaching abilities, facilitation skills, energy, and experience.

Clubs are encouraged to send (and pay registration for) two members to each session. Register on the District Conference Registration Form. Graduates of the program will be recognized with a certificate of completion and special Rotary Leadership pin, something district Rotarians should be proud to wear.

                                                    INSTALLATION OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR

The celebration started with a number of Rotarians and spouses assembling supplies in the Shoe Box Project. School supplies, toys and some clothing were put together for the children in Sonora, Mexico. This project started a couple of years ago when Rotarians going to a Mexican school realized that the children didn't have paper, pencils, crayons and other supplies for their school work. These boxes will be delivered around Christmas when Rotarians and others will take them down.

A CPR class was also given that certified those taking it with this life-saving information and technique.

As more attendees arrived the fellowship began. Rotarians and guests came from all over the district, including as far away as Yuma. It was a great time for old friends to get together, as well as be introduced to new Rotarians and guest.

The Shoe Box project

After a gourmet dinner and entertainment the installation took place. Outgoing DG Jim thanked all who helped to make his year a successful one. He and wife, Sue, were presented gifts. Then DG Sandy was installed along with her officers and Assistant Governors.

The new Rotary year was off to a good start.
