Giving Every Third Grader in District 5500 a Key to Their Future

We can all appreciate the need for every child to be given the tools and resources necessary to meet the challenges of tomorrow.  This can not be more important than in the fundamentals of reading.  Many of the clubs in our district have assisted our communities’ students in meeting this challenge by participating in the Dictionary Project for a number of years. The Dictionary Project is a nonprofit charitable organization which provides dictionaries free to third grade students throughout the US with the assistance of sponsors like Rotary. This is a very cost effective program which coincides with the spirit and purpose of Rotary.

While the title of the book is “A Students Dictionary”, the breadth of information contained in it is much broader than the name implies.  In addition to being a dictionary appropriate for any third grader, the book also includes in-depth biographies on our Presidents, valuable civic documents, and much more.  For just a $1.75 per student, this is  truly a treasure chest of information waiting to be explored by the next third grader that receives one.  It will be their very own book.

This past year, Rotary Clubs in District 5500 sponsored the distribution of dictionaries to over 14,500 students in our communities.  Non Rotary civic organizations and other funding sources sponsored the distribution of dictionaries to an additional 5,000. This is a remarkable accomplishment of which we should all be proud.  However, there were still over 5,000 students in our District who did not receive a book. Many of these students are located in rural areas where there are no Rotary clubs.

This year, I would like to broaden the vision of giving a dictionary to every third grader not only in the schools in each of our communities or in our city, but rather to every third grader in our district.  This goal can only be accomplished with the support and contribution of each and every club in the district.  For those clubs which have participated in the past, we need you to commit to distributing dictionaries to those schools which you have served in the past and consider expanding the number of schools you can serve this year.  For those clubs which have not participated in the Program, I urge you to strongly consider it for this year.  And finally, for those of you who may know of an individual or corporation which may be interested in sponsoring unserved schools in our District, please have them contact Wayne Morrison (520-301-5966 or wmorrison@nordresouces.com ) our District Dictionary Coordinator. Also, please inform Wayne of the schools and number of students you will serve in 2011-112.

To learn more about this Program, please visit www.dictionaryproject.org . This program will not only bring joy and inspiration to the third graders we serve but also to the communities in which we live.  With your help, this will become a program in which Rotary will be proudly associated for years to come. Thanks for your consideration.

A Rare Rotary Opportunity
by Phil and Kathleen Silvers

A mosaic of several views of RigaWith the enthusiastic support of DGE Michael Drake, we have arranged a Rotary Friendship Exchange with Latvia in the Latvian-Swedish District 2410.  This is the district where we were invited to be RI President’s  Representatives at their district conference last October.

For D-5500, it is an opportunity for four Rotary couples (or singles combos) to visit one of the most interesting parts of the world—one of the newly independent countries of Eastern Europe .  Our group would go to Latvia the summer of 2012—in later July when they will have their big all-club Rotary  festival .  The eight Latvian Rotarians/partners would come here in February 2012.  Each team would spend about a week in the other country.  Extensions, e.g. Las Vegas or L.A. would be on their own.  Similarly, we likely can arrange some time in Stockholm or Helsinki , for our people if they elect that option.  Sweden is right across the Baltic Sea from Latvia …that’s why they are in the same Rotary district.  It is a short flight from Stockholm or Helsinki to Riga , and now American Airlines has a direct flight from Chicago to Helsinki .

More importantly, Latvia is an ancient and beautiful country, but with some poverty.  Thus it will be a good set-up for Matching Grants and Youth Exchange.  Politically, Latvia is stable.

We have gotten to know many Latvian Rotarians, including the 2011-12 District Governor who is from Riga , Latvia .  Kathleen and I will be willing to lead this exchange—unless it gets oversubscribed and better leaders step forward.  Airfare to Latvia will be about $2,000 pp.  Ferry experience, if you elect to do it, will be additional.  Once we get there, it will be relatively cost-free.  The reciprocity, of course, is that we take care of four Latvian couples here in Arizona next February.   Most Latvian Rotarians speak English, and interpreters are widely available.

If you might be interested in a trip of a lifetime, call or email us:  520-399-3994 or silverlode@cox.net.

Important IRS Information for Clubs

Thus us a recently revised Rotary International document entitled USA-Puerto Rico Rotary Clubs and the IRS. This document includes important information regarding non-deductibility of dues as a charitable contribution the RI has recently become aware of. Furthermore, this is particularly import for clubs with gross receipts of US $100,000 or more to include a statement on this on their dues statement to their members. Should there any questions regarding Rotary clubs and the IRS, please encourage clubs to visit the IRS website for complete details.

                                                                                                Club Visioning in District 5500

Before a club or an organization begins a strategic planning process it needs to have a clear VISION of where they want to be and who they want to be in the future.  More than 60 Rotary Districts internationally, including District 5500, now have trained facilitators to lead a group of Rotarians from individual clubs in a vision facilitation process resulting in operational continuity, consistency, and consensus.

Bob Shogren is our District Club Visioning Chair-- Work: (602) 364-2248, Cell: (520) 603-6126, email bobshogren@cox.net and welcomes conversations about Club Visioning and will schedule clubs interesting in completing the process.
