RI PRESIDENT DISCUSSES GLOBAL POLIO SITUATION
In a special interview with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s PolioNews, Rotary International President Holger Knaack provides an overview of our global polio eradication efforts and the lessons that we’ve learned in the past year as Rotary has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Knaack says that strengthening health systems and advancing scientific knowledge are important factors in fighting disease. Rotary members have learned this through decades of work toward eradicating polio and are now using that knowledge to address the COVID-19 crisis. Knaack emphasizes that we are at a critical point in our goal to rid the world of polio — and it’s time to fight harder than ever. MORE
~THE ROTARY FOUNDATION NEEDS YOU!
We are really close to eradicating polio, but we need more money to finish the job. Last year, by the end of May, District 55000 had $97,000 in contributions to PolioPlus. Of that amount, $7000 was from our District Designated Funds (DDF). This year, as of May 3, our contributions total $64,700, of which $10,000 is DDF. The El Tour has been a huge generator of PolioPlus contributions, and canceling the ride reduced our donations. If you have supported a rider in previous years, would you consider making a contribution of a similar amount this year? Just go to Rotary.org and choose “Donate.” Then choose PolioPlus as the recipient of your donation. If you have a My Rotary account, you can donate from within My Rotary. And if you don’t have one, this would be a good time to sign up.
Don’t forget the Annual Fund. That is where we get the money to fund the popular District Grant program and the funds to apply to global grant projects. Has your club met its Annual Fund goal? Please consider a donation before the end of this Rotary year, June 30. The people of the world need your help.
